A chat with CARA \ DAVIDE

CARA \ DAVIDE, multi-disciplinary design studio based in Milan, is a collaboration between Cara Judd (South Africa) and Davide Gramatica (Italy). Their recent works are characterised by an interest in experimenting with materials, techniques and processes related to different territories. They create personal works and limited editions through close collaborations with expert artisans in Italy and South Africa. Their works are represented by galleries and commissioned by brands.

Who is CARA \ DAVIDE ?

CARA \ DAVIDE is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Milan, founded by Cara Judd and Davide Gramatica.

What does inspire you? 

A lot of different things, even walking about the city is a fascinating source of inspiration. A recurring theme in our work is experimenting with materials, processes and expressive forms, which is often also the starting point of a project.

Cara you are originally from South Africa, Davide from Italy. What are the strengths of your different cultures? 

The strength is the cultural difference itself and less about a specific strength related to our individual cultures. Having different backgrounds allows us to appreciate different perspectives, it challenges us to go beyond our personal comfort zones and we're keen to make that visible in our work.

Beside design, what is your greatest passion?

You design a stool and a bookcase. Your favourite book? 

Davide is a serial collector of books! 
D: This is the most difficult question and I don't have a single answer so I'll give you three titles; Space Program by Tom Sachs, Polina by Bastien Vives, Tolkien's Lord of the Rings; a masterpiece that goes far beyond the fantasy genre
